Reading

A job advert is a company spending money on intent. Read together, the open book shows which bets are being staffed, which are being wound down, and where capacity is being built.

The build-out

of every advertised role

00 — Brief

What the book says

Every statement below is arithmetic over the advertised roles. Nothing is estimated.

Outlook — what the advertising implies

    01 — Clusters

    Where the work is aimed

Roles tagged by strategic cluster from title, profession, discipline and description. A role can serve more than one.

    Cluster by advertised roles

    Named products & platforms

    02 — Organisation

Which part of the company is hiring

Business units are read from the way each advert names its own organisation.

    Business unit

    Commercial solution area

    Named strategic initiative

    Business unit × seniority

Advertised roles by business unit and seniority

    03 — Frontier

    Inside the Frontier organisation

A deep read of the roles that resolve to Microsoft Frontier Company — Industry Solutions Delivery, Forward Deployed Engineering, and the adverts that name Frontier without naming a sub-unit.

Strategic relevance, not a survival forecast

    ISD's future inside Frontier

Strategy evidence is unavailable until the analysis has been regenerated.

      Role shape

      Capability named

Frontier against the other two divisions

Frontier, MCAPS and the engineering divisions compared on role composition

Only adverts whose organisation resolves are counted, so each column is a floor. “Consulting-shaped” means an architect, consultant or engagement-lead title; “selling-shaped” means a sales, specialist or account title. Engineers are excluded from both, because across divisions that measures who writes code rather than who bills for delivery. Travel and people-manager shares are taken over the adverts that state those fields.

      Postings per month, by unit

Counted by the month each posting was created. Bars share one scale across rows; the last bar is the current month and is still filling.

      Postings per month, by vertical

Same scale and window as the panel to the left, so the two read against each other.

Share shift inside the cohort — last 3 months vs the 3 before

Percentage points of the cohort's own postings. Positive means the row took a larger share of the last three months than of the three before.

      Where the roles sit

Named by roles outside the cohort

Language that separates these adverts from the rest of the book

Lift = the share of Frontier adverts using the phrase ÷ its share of every other advert, counted once per advert so repetition cannot manufacture a signal.

        04 — Shape

How the org is being built

Function mix, seniority pyramid, and the individual-contributor to people-manager split.

        Profession × role type

Advertised roles by profession and role type

        Profession

        Discipline

        05 — Skills

What the market is asked to supply

Requirements are read from each advert's Qualifications block and nowhere else — the one part of a posting that states demand rather than describing the team or the job.

        Capability asked for

An advert is counted once per capability, so these do not sum to the number of adverts.

        Open-list clauses — not a capability

These two clauses enumerate acceptable options rather than state a demand, so they are kept out of every ranking, index and crosstab above. Counted as skills they would be the two largest bars on the page while saying nothing about what the job needs.

        Most-named requirements

Highest demand index — last 90 days ÷ baseline

        Lowest demand index

Each row is a requirement's share of the last 90 days of postings divided by its share of the whole open book. The rule at 1.00 is parity. A requirement needs at least twelve adverts to appear.

        The entry bar

        Median years by band

Where an advert states several thresholds, the lowest is taken — that is the bar it will actually accept. The manager band asks for years of people management, which is a different clock from the technical bands.

        Market trend

Share of the month's postings naming the AI stack

LLMs, agents, retrieval and model operations, counted as one requirement.

        Median years of experience demanded

The entry bar stated by that month's postings, in years.

        Requirements per month

        Capabilities per month

Share shift — last 3 months vs the 3 before

Percentage points of the requirements named in each window.

        Degree named

        Requirements that travel together

        Capability × experience band

Share of each experience band's adverts naming each capability

Read down a column: the share of that band's adverts naming the capability. Bands differ wildly in size, so the cells are shares rather than counts.

Reading — what the market is being told to become

          06 — Momentum

          What is accelerating

Index = a cluster's share of the last 30 days of postings ÷ its share of the whole open book. Above 1.00 means over-represented in recent hiring.

Postings created per day, currently open roles

Over- and under-represented in the last 30 days

Each row is a cluster's share of the last 30 days of postings divided by its share of the whole open book. The rule at 1.00 is parity.

          Age of the open book

          Monthly composition

          By strategic cluster

          By business unit

Share shift — last 3 months vs the 3 before

Percentage points of all dated postings. A row gaining share is not the same as a row gaining volume — the whole book grew over the window.

          07 — Geography

          Where the roles sit

A role listing several locations is counted once per country, so country totals exceed the role count.

          Country
